Who Is Dmitry Davidoff? The Psychology Student Who Invented the Social Deduction Game

How a simple classroom exercise at Moscow State University in 1987 sparked a global gaming phenomenon.

If you've ever sat in a circle with friends, closed your eyes on cue, and felt your heart rate spike while someone quietly decided your fate in the dark — you've felt the fingerprints of one man. His name was Dmitry Davidoff (sometimes spelled Dimitry Davidoff, Dimma Davidoff, or in Russian, Дми́трий Давы́дов), and in the spring of 1987, he accidentally created an entire genre of games.

A Classroom Exercise That Became a Global Phenomenon

Davidoff wasn't trying to invent the next Monopoly. He was a student — and by some accounts, also connected to teaching duties — in the Psychology Department at Moscow State University, working under the influence of the Lev Vygotsky school of psychology. He was interested in something much stranger than entertainment: how people behave when they're forced to sit with uncertainty, suspicion, and the discomfort of not knowing who to trust.

So he built a simple exercise. Split a group into two teams. One team, the "Mafia," is small and knows exactly who its members are. The other team, the "Citizens" (or "Townsfolk," depending on who you ask), is large and completely in the dark. Nobody else in the room knows who belongs to which side. Then you let human nature do the rest — the accusations, the bluffing, the nervous laughter, the arguments that get a little too heated for a party game.

That was it. That was the whole invention. And it turned out to be one of the most quietly influential game designs of the last fifty years.

The Core Idea: An Informed Minority vs. an Uninformed Majority

What made Davidoff's creation different from the parlor games that came before it — things like Wink Murder or Murder in the Dark — was the structure of the information itself. In Mafia, the game alternates between a "night phase," where the hidden minority secretly acts against the group, and a "day phase," where everyone argues, defends themselves, and votes someone out.

This "informed minority against an uninformed majority" framework is now the backbone of an entire genre known as social deduction games. Every time you've played Werewolf at a family gathering, bluffed your way through a round of Secret Hitler, or typed a frantic denial into the chat during a round of Among Us, you're playing inside the structure Davidoff sketched out in a Moscow classroom decades before any of those games existed.

Why a Psychology Student Built a Game About Lying

It's worth pausing on why Davidoff made this in the first place. According to accounts of his own writing, including correspondence with game historian Andrew Plotkin, he described the game as surprisingly heuristic — meaning he kept discovering new things about how people think and interact just by watching them play it. Forcing players to sit with error, misjudgment, and the awkward tension of accusing a friend who might be innocent was, to him, the whole point.

That psychological DNA never really left the game. Years later, in 1998, a Russian training institute — the Kaliningrad Higher School of the Internal Affairs Ministry — actually built lectures around Mafia and a related game called Murder as part of a course on visual psychodiagnostics, essentially using the game to teach people how to read nonverbal cues and deception. A party game had become a teaching tool for reading human behavior, which feels like exactly what Davidoff set out to do in the first place.

From Moscow Dorm Rooms to the World

Mafia didn't stay confined to one psychology department for long. It spread the way good folk traditions spread — student to student, dorm room to dorm room, summer camp to summer camp — long before the internet could have done that job for it. There was no publisher, no marketing budget, no box on a store shelf. Just a set of rules simple enough to explain in two minutes and compelling enough that nobody wanted to stop playing after one round.

Eventually the game crossed into the West, where it picked up new names and new skins. In the United States, a version published as a card game became known as Werewolf. Online communities adapted it for forums and text-based play. And decades later, when a small studio needed a mechanic for a multiplayer game about a spaceship crew hunting for a hidden killer, they reached for the same bones Davidoff had built — that game became Among Us, and it introduced an entirely new generation to the feeling Davidoff had been chasing back in 1987: the specific thrill of not knowing who in the room you can actually trust.

Davidoff's Legacy

Dmitry Davidoff never patented Mafia. He never built a company around it. By his own account, he simply wanted to write down the original rules so they wouldn't get lost as people kept modifying them — and modify them people did, endlessly, which is part of why the genre is so alive today. There's a version of Mafia or Werewolf being played in nearly every language on earth right now, and almost none of the people playing it know the name of the psychology student who first put a deck of cards on a table and asked a room full of strangers to figure out who was lying.

That's the strange afterlife of a great idea — it outgrows its inventor completely.
